Sport
at Marian College is an important part of a student’s physical and social
development. Students are offered a wide range of activities to participate
in from a competitive level to refereeing or umpiring and coaching.
Internal sport:
Held on Tuesday afternoons for Years 7 and 9 and Friday for
Years 8 and 10. Staff who supervise sport at Marian College co-ordinate a
series of internal competitions with students divided into mixed ability
teams. Each sport is presented with awards at the conclusion of their
competition each term. These include awards for the winning team, best and
fairest, excellent participation and most improved.
All
students participate in a different sport each term. Sport will often be
held at external venues to ensure students have access to a variety of
enjoyable sports and to participate in activities they may not normally do
in their PD/H/PE program.
School Carnivals:
Marian College holds two swimming carnivals in Term 1. The first, a night
carnival, is a selection trial for the zone team. The second is a whole
school carnival later in the Term. In Term 2 a cross country carnival is
run in the school grounds and in Term 3 the Marian College athletics
carnival is held at Alfred Whaling Reserve, Baulkham Hills.
The Hills Zone Sporting Association
provides the main access to Inter-School Sport. The Association was formed
to accommodate the schools in the Hills District and the games are played
after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the participating
schools or local venues. The sports played in the Hills Zone competition
include –
athletics, cross country, cricket, hockey, indoor cricket, indoor soccer,
netball, rugby union, rugby league, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and
touch football
Marian also competes in the
HZSA swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals. Marian utilises the
services of the Parramatta Diocese Secondary School Sport’s Council (PDSSSC)
for its access to regional, state and national representation. A student can
represent via the following pathway:

This
structure is used for most sports. However, some sports do not ask for a
diocesan team and select students on an individual basis to represent
Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC). This is done where interest in the sport
is insufficient to hold a diocesan carnival or a structure existed prior to
the formation of the CCC. The Sports Co-ordinator is aware of trial dates
for each sport and students are strongly encouraged to attend these trials.
Marian
College has had numerous successes over the years in a variety of sports.
Students have achieved these results through hard work, a commitment to
training and a willingness to do their best every time they compete. Success
is gauged at every level, be that at the local park, or the National titles.
To do your best is seen as the ultimate goal.
Structures are in place at Marian which allow students to pursue their
physical talents to the level with which they feel comfortable. Our
relatively small size allows for a greater percentage of the student body to
participate in the sports offered and gain experience with leadership,
sportsmanship, personal development and problem solving.
